Notice how Jesus confronted the hypocrisy of the Pharisees (Luke 14:2-6). Why do you think they remained silent when Jesus asked if healing on the Sabbath was lawful (Luke 14:3-4)? Are there times when we also value traditions and legalistic rules over showing love and compassion? Jesus’ question in Luke 14:5-6 confirmed their hypocrisy and showed that their real concern was not for keeping the Sabbath, but just to find fault with Jesus (cf. Luke 13:10-15).
Read Luke 14:7-11 again and take note of Jesus’ warning against self-exaltation. Have you ever experienced what Jesus described here in the church or society? Some rich people, church leaders and politicians have the attitude of demanding respect rather than earning it. It is always better and more honourable to be discovered for who you are than to try to exert yourself as an important personality.
In Luke 14:12-14, Jesus addresses the way we do generosity. Instead of giving to those who can give to us in return, Jesus encourages us to give to those who cannot repay us. What does this reveal about God’s heart for those who are often overlooked in the Church or society?
